Lithophanes & Chromaphanes

These are so cool and even more impressively, a fairly old tech seeing new uses with 3d printing. Take an image such as the one below:

Above is a picture of a friend’s beloved pet, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi Mix named Dante. Dante passed away a few years ago and I thought it would be a great way to remember him to create a chromaphane based on this photo.

So, What is a chromaphane? Let’s take a look!

Above is a well-known lithophane featuring Frederick the Great. Here, we can make out the image but its not very clearly defined. However, once light is passed through via a backlight or another method, the detail becomes clear.

Here is that same lithophane, backlit. The detail is amazing!

A Chromaphane is much like a traditional lithophane, but with color. I wont surprise the ending, but take a look at how the Chromaphane of Dante turned out!
